About Cutting for Stone
"Cutting for Stone is a compelling, epic tale of family, culture, medicine, loss, and life. Beautifully written, it is thought provoking and wraps the reader into its story and characters." - Jenny, OBO supporter and volunteer
Please join us to connect with One By One's work and the issues surrounding fistula prevention and treatment through the lens of Cutting for Stone. We will have small guided group discussions on the book followed by a panel discussion with question and answer, and Ethiopian coffee and snacks.
We are pleased to announce our wonderful panel
Lydia Assefa-Dawson was born and raised in Ethiopia. Lydia will be our panel expert on Ethiopian culture and society. She has an amazing story of courage and resilience coming from a rural community and having a mother who was very young when she was married. Due to a disabling accident as an infant, Lydia's parents had to make the heart wrenching decision to leave her at a hospital, to be raised in a Presbyterian Missionary. Lydia came to the United States for higher education and now works in city government and non-profit organizations. The television program 20/20 featured Lydia's amazing story several years ago.
Dr. Laura Hart is a urologist and an amazing philanthropist and volunteer. She works with Physicians for Peace, is a member of RESULTS and has traveled to offer urologic surgery including fistula repair surgery to people in need. She most recently returned from Gaza and Mali. She is a Board member, Grantmaking Committee member and speaker for One By One.
Heidi Breeze-Harris is the co-founder and Executive Director of One By One, a non-profit based in Seattle that is dedicated to the elimination of obstetric fistula. She oversees One By One's domestic and international programs, which include education, advocacy, fundraising and grantmaking in support of fistula treatment and prevention. She has worked extensively on a broad range of social justice and health issues affecting women globally - speaking and consulting with community groups, universities, NGOs, and government and UN agencies. Heidi also has a background in community design, public art, filmmaking and photography. Her work on behalf of girls and women is balanced by her joyful family life with her husband, Jack, and their six-year-old son, Coleman.
