PROGRAMS & PARTNERS
One By One currently operates two primary
programs. We make direct grants to organizations that
treat and prevent fistula and/or provide
services to women who have undergone fistula
surgery to aid them in returning to their
communities. We also conduct public awareness
programs and develop innovative ways for
individuals and groups to engage in the
fight to end fistula.
Grantmaking
In 2006, One By One will make two grants
to help eliminate fistula in the developing
world. The first grant will be made to our
technical partner, the Campaign
to End Fistula. You can learn more
about the Campaign here.
The
second grant will be made to the Bugando
Medical Center Fistula Project.
The BMC Fistula Project, founded in 1997
by a group of health and human rights professionals,
is affiliated with the Bugando Medical Center,
a government-run hospital in Mwanza, Tanzania.
One By One’s 2006 grant to the Bugando
Medical Center Fistula Project will assist
in funding the basic costs of fistula repair,
including surgical equipment and staff salaries,
and related costs such as patient transportation,
enabling more women to access life-changing
treatment. One By One will also work with
selected partners to provide the Project
with other resources necessary to their
work, such as volunteer medical personnel
and basic medical supplies.
Public Education
As
a part of our public education program,
One By One creates innovative ways for individuals
and organizations around the world to engage
in the fight against fistula. In 2006, we
began a collaboration with Sierra Club to
develop the Green-Pink Project.
The Green-Pink Project
One By One has joined together
with the Sierra Club, the nation’s
oldest and largest environmental organization,
to protect women and the environment, worldwide.
One By One and the Sierra
Club recognize that women’s voices
and access to basic rights, including quality
healthcare, are crucial to protecting our
environment. Women who are able to give
birth to healthy children choose to have
fewer children. This in turn has profound
consequences on the environment, including
forest preservation and a reduction in greenhouse
gas production.
Through the Green-Pink Project,
environmental activists and women’s
health activists are invited to host Green-Pink
Parties, a variation of One By One’s
own giving circle, to raise funds for fistula
care and, in doing so, help to ensure the
protection of our earth's natural resources.
If you’re interested
in hosting a party or you’d like to
learn more, contact us at greenpink@fightfistula.org.
Our Partners
One By One is proud to work in
partnership with several extraordinary organizations.

The Campaign to End
Fistula
One By One believes strongly in
the long-term sustainable approach of the
Campaign to end fistula and in their broad
distribution of funds and technical assistance.
For this reason, One By One had chosen the
Campaign to End fistula as its initial grantee.
The campaign also generously provides One
By One with technical assistance as we seek
to make other impactful grants to end fistula
in the developing world.
The United Nations Population
Fund, (UNFPA) is the world's largest international
source of funding for population and reproductive
health programs. UNFPA supports programs
in over 140 developing countries to improve
reproductive health by supporting men, women
and youth to plan their families, undergo
pregnancy and childbirth safely, prevent
HIV/AIDS, and ensure women’s equality.
In 2003, UNFPA and its partners launched
the first-ever global Campaign to End Fistula.
This includes interventions to:
• Prevent fistula from occurring.
• Treat women who are affected.
• Renew the hopes and dreams of those
who suffer from the condition.
This includes bringing it to the attention
of policy-makers and communities, thereby
reducing the stigma associated with it,
and helping women who have undergone treatment
return to full and productive lives.
The Campaign currently covers more than
30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South
Asia and some Arab States.

Fistula, visit www.endfistula.org.
The United Nations
Foundation
Without the support of the United
Nations Foundation, One By One would never
have existed. The United Nations Foundation
served as One By One’s umbrella organization
from March 2005 through May 2006, and provided
One By One with a critical start-up grant
in May 2006` as we transitioned into an
independent organization.
The UN Foundation was created in 1998 with
entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s
historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes
and activities.
The UN Foundation builds and implements
public-private partnerships to address the
world’s most pressing problems, and
also works to broaden support for the UN
through advocacy and public outreach. The
UN Foundation is a public charity.
The UN Foundation strengthens
and supports the UN and its causes through
a blend of advocacy, grantmaking, and partnerships.

Sierra Club, Global
Population & the Environment Program
The Sierra Club, known for its
work on environmental issues, understands
that population growth affects the environment.
The Global Population & the Environment
Program works to slow population growth
and its impacts by promoting voluntary family
planning and by encouraging the public to
advocate for women and girls' access to
basic rights, including health care and
education.
